Custom Christmas Card

This is a card that I custom made for the head teacher at the school I teach at. I used my Cricut and Sure Cuts A Lot 2 to cut the silhouette from a dingbats font. I made the decorative label for the greeting using a corner punch - I have uploaded a video to Youtube with a tutorial to show you how.

However, a basic craft kit containing scissors, glue, pencil, ruler and paper trimmer would be useful, although there are a limited number of these items that can be borrowed if necessary.

Wallet Album Class

Need a quick last minute present? Then this class is just for you - an album you can make in minutes from one sheet of 12 x 12 paper! The wallet album contains 6 photo inserts for you, or the recipient, to add photos.

The class kit includes sheet of 12 x 12 paper for wallet album, 12 x 12 cardstock for photo inserts and closing band, sticker pack for decorating album. A variety of kits are available, both masculine and feminine. £4.50 each.

You can make an album during the morning or afternoon workshop.

Here are the directions to the location of the scrapbooking workshops:

Coming from Norwich along A47

Continue along A47 towards Dereham until it becomes dual carriageway (past Hockering). Take the first slip road on the left to North Tuddenham. At the top of the slip road turn left. The Village Hall is the first building on the left down this single track road.

Coming from Dereham along A47

Head towards Norwich on the A47. A little way before the dual carriageway becomes single carriageway, take the North Tuddenham slip road to the left. At the top of the slip road turn right. Take the next right, which will take you over the dual carriageway. Continue down this road and the Village Hall is the first building on the left down this single track road.

Coming from Mattishall along the back roads

Take the Burgh Lane (almost opposite the church - the opposite one to that taken to get to Cafe Verde) out of the village. At T junction turn left. Follow this single track road until it comes to the next T junction. Turn right then immediately left. The Village Hall is the second building on the right.

I joined in the featured designer challenge over at The Digital Scrapbooking Studio again this month. The lovely vintage style paper and embellishments made me think of weddings. So this is my first scrapbook page of my wedding! Joining in the challenges is a great way to have a go at digital scrapbooking. You get a free mini-kit to use and can see what other people have done to get ideas.

Come and make 'star' borders and embellishments. All materials (except adhesive) are provided for you to make about 10 items (a selection is shown above), using a variety of patterned paper, card-stock, epoxy stickers and embossed and foiled die-cuts and paper ribbon. These versatile borders can be used on celebration, New Years Eve, party and boy pages - to name but a few!

Cost £8 for class or £14 if staying to scrapbook in the afternoon.

The Studio Progressive Scrap

Have also decided to take part in another challenge on the Digital Scrapbooking Studio site called a Progressive Scrap. Basically, on day one you can download three digital papers and there are instructions how to use them, e.g. you must use each one once and one must be in a shape other than a rectangle. You can recolour the papers if you want and change the opacity. You then upload your layout to the challenge gallery. If you do this you get the link to the next days elements. Each day there are rules as to how many you must use of each. Also you cannot change any part you did previously. Below you can see my layouts from day 1 to day 5. There are two more days to go and I cannot imagine where I am going to put any more items! It has been great fun as you never know what you are going to get. It's also interesting to see everyone else's layout as they are all so different even though we have the same items and rules.

I have admired digital scrapbook pages for a while but never dabbled myself. I love using Photoshop to 'play' with my photos but hadn't got as far as making a page. I would like to do a digital wedding album so thought I ought to try some other pages first. The Digital Scrapbook Studio has some great digital supplies and I found a challenge on their site. Each month they have a featured designer and give away some of their products to make a layout with. This month is Nibbles Scribbles and you can download the freebies here. This is the page I created for the challenge:

The Pink Stamper Design Team results

Unfortunately I didn't get to be on the Pink Stamper Design team - nearly 400 people applied! However I did get an honourable mention (see blog post - I'm Vicki no.78). This was very exciting as there were only 8 honourable mentions and I have been able to choose one of the stamp sets she has designed!

The Pink Stamper Design Team 2011

The Pink Stamper has openings for 2 people on her 2011 design team. I love her blog and Youtube videos, subscribing to both, so decided to have a go at the challenge to be on the team. The challenge is to make a card, scrapbook page or other project using my favourite Cricut cartridge and the colours pink, green and brown.

I decided to make a birthday card (you can never have too many of these!) using one of my favourite cartridges - Once Upon A Princess. This cartridge is so versatile and doesn't have to just be 'princessy'. My scraps box provided most of the paper.

Recipe:

Tall white card
Making Memories vinyl sticker pink dot paper - cut slightly smaller than the card
White card rectangle punched around the edge with Stampin' Up Scallop punch and inked with Antique Linen and Walnut Stain Distress Ink. Then embossed with Swiss Dots embossing folder
Bull rushes and grass (Everyday Paper Doll cartridge) cut at 7" length from green cardstock then beige cardstock
Butterfly (Once Upon a Princess cartridge) cut at 2 1/2" from various pink paper and cardstock scraps. Parts coloured with Sakura glitter gel pens and antennae made from a piece of copper wire folded in half with brown beads on each end. Butterfly body attached to the card using foam pads
Brown ribbon wrapped around the card and tied in a knot
Stampin' Up happy birthday stamped using Versafine Vintage Sepia ink and small flower stamped with pink pen. Punched out using Stampin' Up window punch and edged with a pink pen. Attached to the card using foam pads

Journal Your Christmas

I decided to take an online class by Shimelle called Journal Your Christmas. I love Christmas and it's a great way to document all the preparations as well as the big day. The class started on the 1st of December but I didn't sign up until halfway through the month so I am bit behind!

I have really enjoyed working on this album and receiving the email prompts each day. However I am now a bit stuck as my printer has run out of cyan ink so I can't print anymore photos. Also I have discovered that all my photos from Christmas's past are at my parents' house!

Rainbow card

Here's a card I made using the Once Upon A Princess cartridge for my Cricut machine. I was inspired to make the card by a challenge on the Bitten by the Bug 2 blog. I coloured the rainbow with Copic markers then covered with glitter. I used puff paint on the clouds. I think I will send it to my God-daughter for her birthday.

There will able be a morning class making people to go on your scrapbook pages (or cards!). The cost of this class is £2 plus the normal workshop fee. You will need flesh or cream coloured card for the body plus scraps of card/paper for the hair, clothes etc. Have a look at the photos that you still need to scrap and you can make great mini versions of the people in the photos! You will also need tape runner/glue pen. This is a great class to make lots of embellishments that can be added to your pages later.

I've been busy having to do reports for school. This is a job I really hate and get fed up so quickly doing it. So to break it up a bit, every so often I surf the internet looking for creative ideas. Also when I have finished a set I reward myself with some crafting time, playing in my craft room with my new toy - a Cricut Expression machine.

Earlier today I found My Creative Time and saw there was a challenge to make a 3D/altered item using the Cricut cartridge 'Paper Doll Dress Up'. This was a cartridge that I have just bought so decided to have a go at the challenge. I have been meaning to make a sign for my classroom door for some time and this was the incentive. I learnt to do the Joseph's Coat stamping technique at a recent Stampers 10 meeting and used some paper I had made for my dress (it's actually the native Indian girl's dress with the sleeves partly cut off). I stuck it all on a CD. I'm sure my class will love it and I can't wait to show them tomorrow!

Dad mini album

When I got my new software - Sure Cuts A Lot - to use with my Cricut, I designed and made a DAD word album. However when it was cut out I didn't particularly like it so I made another one with DAD down the side (this is the one I have done for my dad for Father's Day).

The other day I had a mini album class at my house and as only 2 people were able to come I was able to do some crafting myself. I saw the unfinished DAD album and decided to cover it with paper etc. as something to do. I had great fun making it and using a few of my Cricut cartridges (Paper Dolls Dress Up, Plantin Schoolbook, Paisley). I might save it and give it to my dad next year or I might sell it!

I have recently bought a Cricut Expression and have had great fun playing with it! This card was made using the Life is a Beach cartridge. I also used my Cuttlebug and the Fiskars ocean embossing plate for the waves. It's my mum's birthday on Monday so I'll probably give it to her!

I recently went to IKEA and found some great scrapbooking templates. Well they were not sold for scrapbooking but are plastic cake doilies! As soon as I saw them I had to measure them (they are just over 11") to make sure that they would fit on a 12 x 12 piece of paper. There are 4 in the pack for £2.99 and I can't wait to use them to cut interesting paper shapes for my scrapbook - I particularly love the scalloped circle!

Storage Box Class

Make this beautiful storage box. It has 12 storage pockets that measure 6.5" x 4.5", storing a variety of small items from die cuts to hand-made greeting cards. It also has magnetic clasps, keeping it 'magically' closed.

Costs £4 for materials (in addition to workshop fee). You will need to bring your choice of paper glue (possibly PVA white glue) and patterned paper for decorating the outside of the box.

Bonus afternoon class

September scrapbooking workshop

The September workshop is on Saturday 12th September 10am to 5pm.

Unfortunately we are unable to continue to use the South Green Enterprise Centre. I have therefore needed to find an alternative location that I could afford (we were able to get the other venue at a special rate as Jo worked there - it was greatly appreciated Jo!). The coming workshops will therefore be held at North Tuddenham Village Hall (click here for directions). This is a basic, large hall with a kitchen (containing microwave, fridge oven etc.). I have needed to make a small increase to the price of the workshops, however tea, coffee etc. will be provided. There is no cafe on site but there is a pub nearby that does food all day. Hopefully we can pre-book our lunches or you could bring a packed lunch.

We'll be working on our albums all day rather than having a morning class so come for however long you can.
Costs: morning £4.50, afternoon £7 or £10 all day (children £3, £4.50 or £7 - must be accompanied by a paying adult)

Here are the directions to the new location of the scrapbooking workshops:

Coming from Norwich along A47

Continue along A47 towards Dereham until it becomes dual carriageway (past Hockering). Take the first slip road on the left to North Tuddenham. At the top of the slip road turn left. The Village Hall is the first building on the left down this single track road.

Coming from Dereham along A47

Head towards Norwich on the A47. A little way before the dual carriageway becomes single carriageway, take the North Tuddenham slip road to the left. At the top of the slip road turn right. Take the next right, which will take you over the dual carriageway. Continue down this road and the Village Hall is the first building on the left down this single track road.

Coming from Mattishall along the back roads

Take the Burgh Lane (almost opposite the church - the opposite one to that taken to get to Cafe Verde) out of the village. At T junction turn left. Follow this single track road until it comes to the next T junction. Turn right then immediately left. The Village Hall is the second building on the right.

Coming from previous venue (Cafe Verde)

Turn right when leaving Cafe Verde car park - heading towards Mattishall. Continue until T junction next to the church. Turn right then immediately left (Burgh Lane) - almost straight over! Continue to T junction and turn left. Follow this single track road until it comes to the next T junction. Turn right then immediately left. The Village Hall is the second building on the right.

Mum asked me to make a couple of wedding cards for her, so here is the design I came up with. I love using my Cuttlebug and embossing folders to produce textured backgrounds (it was a bit tricky though as the paper was bigger than the folder so I had to put it through twice!)

Scrapbooking weekend

It's very exciting that I have finally organised a scrapbooking weekend! Why not come and join us.

Saturday 16th May to Sunday 17th May 2009 at Wensum Valley Hotel

Starting at 10am on the Saturday until 5pm on the Sunday, this is a great chance to have uninterrupted time working on your albums (all night if you want to!). You will also have access to the gym and pool, as well as lovely grounds for walking etc. There will be a hot buffet lunch on the Saturday and Sunday, a 3-course meal on the Saturday evening and a Full English breakfast on the Sunday. Tea and coffee is also provided.

This weekend will be instead of my usual National Scrapbook Day event so there will be a fab goody basket for everyone attending, prizes, etc.

The cost of the weekend is £140 for a single room or £130 if sharing. If you are only able to join us for the day, it is £40 for one day or £70 for both days (the day rate includes lunch but not the evening meal).

I can't believe how long it's been since I last added to my blog. Time just seems to fly by!

I have recently taken part in a swap organised by Trish Bee on the CCSwaps yahoo group. I needed to make 26 small houses. I have fallen in love with the 'bandana' technique so had to use this to decorate my houses. I made the backgrounds by swiping distressing inks onto a non-stick baking sheet, spritzing this with water, then swooshing the white card across the inks. I then stamped onto them with black Stazon ink. I added more black detail using thick and thin permanent pens then added more detail with a white pen.

It was very exciting to receive the first deco book in the post this Monday. It was Ria's book from Holland and had already been elswhere in England before coming to me. I had to use another shining stones background as I'm addicted to making these! I also used one of my altered Photoshop photos. It looks even better in the flesh so I hope Ria likes it.

I have joined a deco (decorated) book round robin on Next Generation Stampers Yahoo group. The book gets sent to someone else on the list who decorated pages then sends it on to someone else on the list. Eventually when the last page is complete it gets sent back to me.

I made a 4" square book using the instructions for the mini-album elsewhere on my blog. I covered the covers with gold wrapping paper before using some of the shining stones backgrounds on top. I decided to add an altered photo of myself so that those receiving it would know what I looked like. I also found a great quote in the introduction of an old encyclopaedia I am 'recycling'. Inside I have included a sign in page and a map where I can add locations when the book returns to me.

On the Next Generation Stampers Yahoo group, Trish Bee is showing us lots of background techniques and suggested we record the techniques in a sketchbook. This is the first technqiue I tried and I have finally put it into a sketchbook. Actually it's the only technique I have tried so far as I keep making more of them and trying different possibilities, like using pearlescent paper rather than glossy photo paper etc.

ATC holder swap

I made this ATC holder as part of a swap on CCSwaps. It will be heading off shortly to Linda in Idaho, USA. I used the mini album instructions (see my blog entry for 22nd November 2007), however I started with a piece of paper 16" square. I stuck ATC clear pockets on each page so it will hold 14 ATCs (It should have held 16 ATCs but I made a mistake when glueing the pages together so had to cut one page off!). I used some of my shining stones backgrounds on the bottle tops.

I have been playing with Photoshop and experimenting with blending modes. I used a photo which I had taken at my birthday party of my friend's little girl, Tahlia. She is so cute, I had to add wings! I also used one of my shining stones scans in the background.

I have recently made some 'instant art' for a swap on CCSwaps. The idea is that these items can be used in other projects you make. These items are ready made so can add speed to any project.

I sent 5 decorated side mounts (I love making these)

Also 5 decorated tags. I had great fun making a variety of backgrounds, including shining stone.

Also 5 little beauties. These are 1.5" x 2" and can be used a card toppers or on ATCs.

I also sent 5 ATC backgrounds. I again had a go at the shining stone technique but used pearlescent card instead of glossy paper. This has an overall sparkle to it which I love.

Shining Stones Backgrounds

I have recently had a go at making shining stones backgrounds, a technique explained by Trish Bee at trishbee.co.uk (see blog entry for Jan 1st). These involved inking a piece of glossy paper (I used a roller), spritzing with water, adding 'mica paint' (made by mixing Perfect Pearls with water etc), spritzing again and drying with a heat gun. These were my first attempts (they are much better in the flesh as the photos don't show the wonderful shimmer):

Today I made some more and found that the paper is really important for achieving a good result. I also used Twinkling H2Os as I have a wider range of colours. They were so easy to use as I just added water then splattered them on.

This one was done on Tesco finest glossy photo paper (I had piece in my scrap box and thought it was the same as I had used before - however it wasn't!). The ink didn't blend very well and when I spritzed it nothing really happened (with the other paper speckles instantly appeared):

So I went back to using my Poundland glossy photo paper (I also love this paper to use with alcohol inks) and am much happier with the results.

Here I used more water so the ink/H2Os puddled more.

Mini album

A couple of weeks ago I made a mini-album for Roger, my boyfriend's, birthday. I posted pictures of it on the Next Generation Stampers yahoo group site. Lots of people wanted the instructions how to make it, but as Roger occasionally checks my blog I needed to wait until after his birthday to post them. I decided to make another album so I could photograph it as I went along.

1. Take a piece of 12" x 12" scrapbook paper. Selecting paper that has a variety of patterns means the pages of the album will be different. However avoid obviously texted paper as some of the text will be the wrong way up!

2. Fold the paper in half lengthways.

3. Open and fold the edges up to the central fold line.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3, folding the other direction so that the paper is divided onto 16 squares.

5. Cut the paper on the folds; 3 squares up, 3 squares down and 3 squares up (follow the black lines on the diagram).

6. Concertina the paper, folding up then down. Make sure the first fold has the blank/wrong side of the paper on top/outwards. Keep going until the whole sheet is folded up.

7. Glue the wrong sides of the paper together to make the pages of the album secure. Already this is like a mini book!

8. Glue a piece of ribbon or fibre across the front of the book, around the spine and across the back.

9. To make the front and back cover, cut 2 squares of chipboard 3" x 3"

10. Cut 2 pieces of paper about 4" x 4" and stick one onto each chipboard square, leaving a border all around the edge.

11. Trim a triangle off each corner of paper, making sure it is not right up to the chipcoard corner.

12. Stick the paper around the chipboard.

13. Stick the covers onto the front and back of the book. Then decorate front cover and pages!

Gideon's zentangle

Gideon, my 8 year old nephew, saw my zentangles last night and was desperate to have a go himself. I found him some card and although I had to draw him the initial string, he had great fun fulling in the sections. He even wanted to come around today and make some more!

Zentangles are so addictive! I decided to try one on an ATC so that I could trade it, or send it to one of my ATC swaps. This one makes me think of a lady dancing with a very large bottom! I then wanted to do another with a smaller nibbed pen so I could get more detail. As I only had a blue pen I used this. I enjoyed drawing the extra detail, although, it took a lot longer to complete.

Zentangles

I can't believe how long it's been since I last posted. I set up my blog and had every intention of regularly posting about all the great things I'd been making. However, as with most good intentions they rarely work out!

Altered Journal

I've had great fun recently altering journals. This one was first covered with torn pages from a 1950s school edition of Macbeth. It even has pencil notes written by a previous student! I added Distressing ink to age it further. I also used Distressing ink to colour the tape and stamped a strip of paper with pen images. I used an art mold to make the key embellishment and coloured it with Brilliance ink. I also added stamped images to the inside covers.

Intaglio Printing

I've been looking for things to add to my Etsy site. I decided to list some of the prints I made a couple of years ago which has got me thinking about the whole printing process, how I got my press etc.

My sister and I attended some Creative Arts days several years ago where we used an etching press for the first time to make mono-prints. We both loved it and wanted to learn more. So we both did some courses at The Works in Beccles, including collographs, intaglio and screen printing. My favourites were the intaglio and screen printing. Although I initially enjoyed mono-printing the results were very unpredictable. With the intaglio technique I had much more control of the outcome. We both wanted to do more but didn't have a press to use at home. Unfortunately neither of us had spare money for one! So Nan came to the rescue...

My Grandfather was a prisoner of war in Japan during the Second World War. A few years ago compensation was given, and as he was no longer alive it went to my Nan. She was always so generous that she wanted my sister and I to have some it. An etching press was a perfect choice as it was something we both wanted yet couldn't afford. We were even able to get some oil-based printing inks and paper.

Intaglio printing:

Intaglio printing uses a plate that has an incised image on it. Ink is rubbed into the grooves, excess removed and then printed. There are several materials that can be used to make the plates and different ways to incise the image. I use mount board.

To make the printing plate -

Draw the design onto mount board (I use the standard sort used for picture framing).

Use a sharp craft knife or scalpel to carefully cut through the top layer of the board, following the lines of the design. Double lines must be cut so that a section can be peeled away to leave a recess for the ink.

Seal the board with button polish/shellac on both sides. It's very important to do this as smoothly as possible as any imperfections will show on the final print.

Example of a finished plate

To prepare the paper -

Take a piece of specialist printing paper at least 1" larger on each side than the plate.
Soak paper in cold water for at least an hour - can be left in all day!
Take the paper out of the water and lay between blotting paper with a weight on top - an old piece of wooden board works great.
The paper needs to be left at least 20 mins - or the time it takes to ink the plate - its not crucial as long as the paper hasn't dried out completely, it needs to be damp but not wet.

To ink the plate -

Mix linseed oil relief printing ink with copper plate oil to give the ink a smooth consistency.
Use a small piece of credit card to smooth the ink into the grooves on the plate.
Use a cloth to wipe away excess ink (I like to use old t-shirts). This is the hardest part as the quality of the final print relies on the amount of ink left on the plate. Too much and it looks messy, not enough and the print has holes or feint sections.
Make sure the edges of the plate are wiped clean.

To print the plate -

Put a piece of newsprint onto the etching press and place the inked plate on top, ink side up.
Lay the damp printing paper on top of the plate and place another piece of newsprint on top.
Roll through the etching press.
Remove the printing paper and wrap in tissue paper - this protects the print while the ink dries.
Clean the plate or make another print.

Notes -

Oil based inks are very messy and can get everywhere! Wear old clothes and surgical gloves.

Welcome

I have finally taken the plunge and started a blog!

Well actually this is the second attempt as I originally typed my email incorrectly and therefore couldn't access my blog after I'd created it. It's taken a while to sort out - the guys at Blogger Support are very helpful - and at last I'm back in.

My life is very hectic with teaching and crafting so we'll see how often I get to add to my bog. However, I'm hoping to be able to share projects I'm working on, tips and tricks, finished items (hopefully not too many disasters - or should I say 'learning experiences') and have some fun along the way.

So I'm off to do some crafting!

Wishful thinking, unfortunately, as I'm off work with Bronchitis! I will therefore now crawl back to bed and dream about all the wonderful projects I could be working on if I had the energy.
